Above Paris — A Rooftop Couples Session with the Eiffel Tower

By Pierre Atelier — Couples, Engagement & Honeymoon Photographer in Paris

There is a moment that happens every time, without exception. The couple steps out onto the rooftop. The city opens up below them. And then — the Eiffel Tower appears on the horizon, real and enormous and quietly glittering, and they both go silent for a second. Not because they were told to. Not because I asked them to. Just because Paris does that to people, especially when they are in love and standing above it all.

That moment is why I do this.

The rooftops of Paris: the most cinematic backdrop in the world

I have photographed couples all over Paris — in the Tuileries gardens, along the Seine, in the backstreets of Montmartre, on the steps of Sacré-Cœur at dawn. Every location has its magic. But nothing quite compares to a rooftop session with a clear view of the Eiffel Tower.

The reason is simple: height changes everything. From street level, Paris is beautiful but busy — tourists, traffic, distractions. From a rooftop, the city becomes a painting. The Haussmann rooftops stretch out in waves of grey zinc and cream stone. The sky takes over. And the Eiffel Tower, which can feel almost ordinary when you are standing next to it, suddenly becomes what it actually is from a distance — one of the most recognisable and romantic silhouettes on earth.

For couples photography, engagement sessions, honeymoon portraits and proposals in Paris, there is simply no better stage.

Golden hour above the city: why timing makes all the difference

Every Paris rooftop session I photograph is planned around the light. In the hour before sunset, the city turns amber. The zinc rooftops catch the warmth. The Eiffel Tower glows. Shadows become long and soft. It is the kind of light that makes even the most camera-shy person look extraordinary — and that turns a good photo into something you will frame and keep for the rest of your life.

I always schedule rooftop sessions in that window: the two hours before golden hour to settle in, explore the space and let the couple forget the camera is there — and then golden hour itself, when everything aligns. By the time the Eiffel Tower sparkles at the top of the hour, we are already in the right spot, at the right angle, ready.

This is not happy accident. It is preparation, experience, and a genuine obsession with light that I have carried since I first picked up a camera.

What a Paris rooftop session looks like — from beginning to end

Most people have never done a professional photo session before. Or if they have, they remember feeling stiff, self-conscious, unsure of what to do with their hands. That is the thing I work hardest to undo.

A rooftop session with me starts with a conversation — about the couple, their story, what they love about each other, how they met, what Paris means to them. I want to know if she laughs with her whole face or just her eyes. I want to know if he is the kind of person who reaches for her hand without thinking about it. Because those details are the photos.

Once we are on the rooftop, I guide without directing. I create situations — a slow walk along the edge of the terrace, a quiet moment looking out over the city, a whispered joke that makes them both laugh without knowing I pressed the shutter. The Eiffel Tower is always there in the background, but it never overshadows the two people in front of it. That is the balance I look for in every frame.

The session typically lasts ninety minutes to two hours. Long enough to relax, to play, to find the light. Short enough to stay in the moment.

Engagement sessions in Paris: more than just pretty pictures

If you are newly engaged and thinking about an engagement session in Paris, here is what I want you to know: it is not just about the photos. It is about having a moment that is entirely yours, in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, before the planning and the logistics and the guest lists take over.

An engagement session on a Paris rooftop — with the Eiffel Tower in the background, the city spread out below you, the sun going down over the Seine — is something you will remember independently of the photos. The photos are the bonus. They are the proof that it happened, that it was real, that you were there together and it was that beautiful.

I work with couples from all over the world who come to Paris specifically for their engagement session. From New York, London, Sydney, Dubai, Tokyo. Paris is their destination, their backdrop, their love story made visible. My job is to make sure the images match what they felt when they were standing there.

Proposal photography in Paris: capturing the moment before they say yes

A proposal in Paris is one of the most nerve-wracking and beautiful things to photograph. The person proposing has usually been carrying this secret for months. The person being proposed to has no idea what is about to happen. And I am there, hidden but close enough, waiting for the exact moment the question is asked.

A rooftop location is perfect for a Paris proposal for several reasons. It is naturally intimate — fewer bystanders, more privacy. The view creates an emotional setting before anything has even been said. And the Eiffel Tower in the background gives the moment a scale and a romance that is genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else in the world.

I have coordinated rooftop proposals across Paris, working closely with the proposing partner in the weeks leading up to the session to plan every detail: the exact spot, the timing relative to the light, where I will be positioned so they never notice me until it is already done and they are saying yes. If you are planning a proposal in Paris and want it documented from the first nervous breath to the first kiss after the answer — this is what I do.

Honeymoon portraits in Paris: slow, intimate, unhurried

Your wedding is over. The noise has settled. And now you are in Paris together, for the first time as a married couple, with nowhere to be and no one to manage. A honeymoon portrait session is the most relaxed, most intimate kind of shoot I do — because the pressure is gone, and what is left is just the two of you, in love, in Paris.

A rooftop session during a honeymoon feels different from an engagement session. There is less anticipation, more ease. Couples hold each other differently when they have just got married. There is a kind of settledness to it — a quiet confidence in being together — that photographs beautifully. Add the Eiffel Tower at golden hour, and you have images that belong in a different category entirely.

I offer honeymoon portrait sessions of one to three hours, depending on what you want to cover — rooftop, riverside, gardens, streets. Many couples choose to combine a rooftop golden hour session with a late-afternoon walk through the 7th arrondissement, ending by the Seine as the lights come on across the city.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book a rooftop photo session in Paris with the Eiffel Tower view? Get in touch through my contact page at pierreatelier.com and tell me your dates, the type of session you have in mind — couples, engagement, honeymoon, or proposal — and a little about your story. I work with a selection of rooftop locations across Paris depending on the light direction, the season and the specific view you want. I will recommend the right one for your session and handle all the logistics.

What is the best time of year for a Paris rooftop photo session? Every season has its own beauty in Paris. Spring brings soft pink light and blossoming trees visible even from the rooftops. Summer evenings are long and warm, with golden hour stretching past 9pm. Autumn turns the city copper and rust, and the lower light creates a cinematic warmth that is extraordinary. Winter is my personal favourite — the air is crisp, the city is quieter, and the Eiffel Tower sparkles against a deep blue dusk sky.

Do you photograph proposals in Paris? Yes, and it is one of the most meaningful things I do. I work confidentially with the proposing partner in advance, plan the exact location and timing, and position myself discreetly so the moment is completely natural. You will receive the full sequence of images — the anticipation, the question, the reaction, the first kiss after yes.

How far in advance should I book a couples or engagement session in Paris? For spring and autumn sessions — the most popular seasons — I recommend booking two to four months in advance at minimum. For a specific date during peak travel periods like June, September or the Christmas season, earlier is always better. Proposal sessions should be booked as soon as the date is confirmed, to allow time for advance planning.

What should we wear for a Paris rooftop photo session? Wear what makes you feel like yourselves — just a slightly elevated version. Avoid logos and very busy patterns, which distract the eye in photos. Think about how your colours will work together as a pair, and consider the season. I am happy to advise on outfits before the session — just send me what you are thinking and I will give you an honest opinion.

Can you photograph both our proposal and our engagement session in Paris? Absolutely. Many couples book a proposal session and return the following day — or the following morning — for a relaxed engagement session once the secret is out and the nerves have turned into joy. It is one of my favourite combinations to photograph.
